Course Description:

Does everybody in your company hate your performance management system? I mean, really hate your performance management system and is your executive leadership team trying to eliminate the process because they are so sick of the lack of results? Are you on the bandwagon that says we should just completely get rid of performance management in the company? Are your organizations failing to manage the correct documentation of your performance management efforts throughout your organization? Many companies are failing to correctly maintain their performance management records because the leaders refuse to comply with a system they do not believe in and are completely frustrated with trying to make work. Whether you use an informal or formal process or whether you pretend that you don't have a performance management process, you will always manage performance in some way to allow you to make decisions.

Often companies will abandon their formal process and all it really does is eliminate the documentation and records. This will leave the organization exposed to litigation, lawsuits and deviation from compliance. You need to consciously think about what it is you are trying to accomplish with your performance management system. The only way to make sure that it's being handled properly is to make sure you keep all the records and documentation appropriately. Your documentation is the critical proof you need to demonstrate compliance and fairness to government entities that could audit or investigate your company.

Performance Management, as a system in organizations, is undergoing a metamorphosis and most companies and their employees are dissatisfied with the current method they are using to navigate through this critical process. It is essential to understand the current thinking about performance management to successfully adjust your organization’s system in a way that will improve the results of your process. As you manage these changes or keep the current system, it critical that you document all aspects of your performance management correctly and in full compliance.

In order to understand how to ensure that you have a viable system you must decide what your organization’s purpose is for performance management. Your purpose will drive the actions you take with your performance management and will significantly impact how you will maintain your performance management records.

During this presentation you will gain an understanding of some of the reasons organizations conduct performance management. You will also become equipped with the knowledge to determine specifically why your organization is conducting performance management that aligns with your organization’s strategy. You will learn how to manage your performance management whether you have hard copies records or you have electronic files.

You will learn the slight differences and the similarities between electronic files and hardcopy files, including an understanding that they both have the same basic compliance concerns. You will learn the importance of maintaining records for all employees (both positive and negative feedback) and documentation of discussions. You will learn which files to keep and what files you should get rid of to ensure compliance. Do you know how long you should keep the performance management files and when do you get rid of them?

Who should maintain your official, formal performance management files/records? You will learn the best practice as well as an understanding that the informal files each supervisor/manager keeps on their employees are just as important as the formal legal and complete records stored by Human resources or perhaps an office manage
